ohn C. Smith,
log book entry 22 since September 1st, 1939.
Dear Log,
It's
been several months and a year since we declared war on Germany but the
destruction and catastophe is unbelievable in the amount of time it has
been. I am torn between two possibilities, I should leave Britain and
join my family in Ireland during the war but growing up in Britain has
changed my attitude towards the country. I remember my younger years as
our family fed and gave accomodation to the Irish rebels.
Back
then my feelings for Britian were full of hatred and annoyance but
after experiencing some of the things that the British went through as
well I felt different to this country I live in now. Although they had
no right to force it on us it was a way of life and their life wasnt as
bad as ours but not very good either.
The reason for this
recollection of my childhood is the sight that beheld me as I left the
bunker under London. The carnage and obliteration of peoples homes and
the few people that hadnt made it in time. It sickened me as I walked
down the street, that used to be my street, to a house which used to be
my house. I stared up at it in amazement as the whole top floor had
been blown clean off. A neighbour that stood beside me said: "You've
got to hand it to them, they've got one hell of a shot, dont they?" He
was joking and I couldnt blame him. I decided I needed a bit of humour
in my ageing body and joined him in a rough laugh laced with the
disappointment.
I turned around and took a long hard stare at the
crumbling buildings and the debris that littered the street. I blinked
back tears. My neighbour walked up to me and pat his hand on my
shoulder. "It was meant to happen eventually." He said soothingly.
